Right now, as many as 30 million Americans are either out of work or underemployed. Many think that this figure is way off target and there are many more, but it gives you an idea of how many people are looking for employment. This group is composed of “old timers”, “baby boomers”, millennials and others. This condition exists because of many reasons. Among them are the automation of many labor-intensive tasks, the pervasiveness of international employment, and the recent recession among other things. Along with this condition, recent research has found that about 70% of the employed do not enjoy their work and are just drudging through because they need the money. This was reported by Derek Thompson in “A World Without Work” The Atlantic Magazine. He also reports that the formation of new businesses has declined in the past few decades in America. As individuals, we all have the power to change these statistics and some people are actually doing this. Derek Dahl in “10 Reasons to Run Your Own Business” Inc Magazine, reported that 600,000 new businesses are formed each year, but that’s not enough, we need more.

Dahl defined several convincing reasons why owning your own business will probably be one of the most satisfying things that you can do with your life. He shared that owning a business provides ”Independence, the chance to develop mastery, and a sense of purpose.” We’re all looking for meaning and a sense of purpose for our lives. Consider additional reasons for owning a business.

You are the boss. You are in charge and you can achieve the level of methods and quality that you desire. Quality is in low supply in this country. Customers are eager to work with companies where high-quality products and services as their standard. You are in charge of the design and excellence of your product or service.
You can do what you enjoy doing as an occupation. You can work because you love it, not just because you are helping to fulfill the dream of someone else. You are motivated by what you are doing for yourself each day.
You decide how much of your time you want to devote to the business. You can design your time to include work as well as play or some other hobby.
You can design your personal Mission, Values and Vision. You will help determine the future for yourself, your family and the larger society.
You can contribute to a better “quality of life” for yourself, your employees and your customers.

At this point most are asking, where is the money for this? Remember, I don’t have a job. If you can think of the finances as a secondary concern, you can begin designing a complete
framework for your new business. You can do several things with the extra time you have when you’re not job hunting. One or two hours a day can be very productive. You can do three things to help you begin the process.

First, ask yourself what would you really enjoy doing as an occupation? What are you curious about? What could you simplify in your industry or some other industry? What is missing in an industry?

Second, use imagination and dreaming for the creation of various successful conditions for your enterprise.

Third, create charts, diagrams and descriptions that show your Mission, Values and Vision.

This can be a simple notebook or printed documents of ideas that have come to mind as you explore the creation of a new enterprise. You can explore and learn almost anything at “You Tube University” to give you knowledge and guidance. The internet is a wonderful resource for almost anything you need to learn. Use it to its greatest advantage. Use your time to its greatest advantage. Build a broad framework for a new business. You may uncover a great surprise that can change your future for the better.
